A tribute to the gentle giant: Joey Ramone

16 years ago, today, the Rock World lost a major Star 🌟, Jeffrey Ross Hyman, aka Joey Ramone, lead singer of The Ramones, who died of lymphoma in New York on April 15, 2001, a month before his 50th birthday.

“For me, punk is about real feelings. It’s not about ‘Yeah, I’m a punk and I’m angry.’ That’s a lot of crap. It’s about loving the things that really matter: passion, heart and soul.”

In this occasion, I would definitely recommend the documentary End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones, which includes interviews with former and later members, people close to the band (Dee Dee Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Joey Ramone, Marky Ramone, C.J. Ramone, Tommy Ramone, Riche Ramone, Elvis Ramone) and fellow musicians like Debbie Harry and Joe Strummer.

The interviews reveal details about the relationship between the band members and aspects of their personalities that show what a kind person Joey was.

The Ramones, formed in 1974, pioneers of the punk rock, were a source of inspiration for a lot of  great musicians: this article – and many other-  appeared on the Miami New Times reckons bands like Green Day, Metallica,The strokes, Nirvana wouldn’t exist without the Forest Hill’s band.

Here’s a cover of The Ramones’ song Life is a Gas by The Strokes

Looking forward to this event! Perfect location and perfect music 👍

22 April, 20.00 – 1.00

MOTH CLUB, Vallette Street, E9 6, Hackney, London

Meanwhile…

We know how great the quintessential NYC bands are (Blondie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Ramones, The Velvet Underground, Interpol…) But why don’t you also check out these new bands from the Big Apple:

The Britanys

Unsigned Rock&Roll band from NYC, founded in 2014

They’ve got a similar charm to that found in Pete and Carl’s early ramshackle stuff according to the NME Magazine, and like the early The Strokes according to DIY Magazine.

QTY

A New York duo that sounds like the Velvet Underground, Public Access TV and Interpol, says NME, and I would add Adam Green.

When we was young, oh man did we have fun

If you are a Strokes fan, do yourself a favour and check out colinelane.com, Coline Lane’s photography website, where you can find a couple of sections dedicated to the band:

  • The Strokes 2001-2006
  • So Buckingham Palace

A collection of snaps that captured some posing and some spontaneous pictures of five young musicians whom did not yet know that their first album, Is this It, would have been voted, 10 years after its release, as the second best in the Rolling Stone 100 Best Albums of the 2000s (and first in my personal ranking).

The albums show an always composed and elegant Nikolai, smiling Fab and Nick, a hairy Albert and a mostly injured Julian with the 2000s’ New York City on the background, or the band and the fans during the UK tour in Reading, Leeds and Glasgow.

You can also spot a gorgeous (and at the time still groupie) Amanda de Cadenet, the band’s manager Ryan Gentles, Meg&Jack White and even Beck.
